I just completed planning/managing/executing a conference in October and I have 2 more in the immediate future - and I could not agree with you more. There is a heafty pricetag on these conferences (the one I just did was for entrepreneurs and the cost for general admission was $150 - the last I checked, when you start your own company, aren't you poor?). You're right - they CAN find this stuff for free on the inter-wide-web. Basically they are paying for a really, REALLY expensive "grab-and-go lunch".

I say that, yet I had over 320 people attend my event. It's crazy. I would never pay for anything like that - yet there are people out there who think they absolutely NEED to be out and about, "see and be seen". Yet the answers they need are literally at thier fingertips.

I guess those are the people who are a part of the "small business black hole". Many try, few succeed - because they have NO IDEA what they are doing. I am proud to say I am one of them. That's why I don't own my own business. I work for "the man".

Good article.
