Beneficial Social Media Platforms for SEM

Netvantage primarily focuses on search engine marketing, but a company needs more than good rankings on search engines. We are just a small part of the marketing realm. A lot of other marketing tactics can benefit what we do and vice versa. Social media is a great partner for SEM. In this blog post, the Netvantage team shares which social media platform they think is most beneficial for SEM.

In my opinion, Pinterest is one of the best social media platforms to use for SEM. It features its own unique search engine called Guided Search and has more than 150 million active users. Pinterest mostly acts as a referral traffic source for websites, however, a fully optimized Pinterest profile can also show up in Google search results. People use Pinterest to discover and explore new ideas or opportunities, which makes it a great platform for every type of business. In general, people enjoy looking at visuals more than reading, and since Pinterest is full of attention-grabbing pictures, graphs, charts, and lists, people never get bored of exploring.

I realize as an SEO guy I’m supposed to say Twitter here, but I’m an old person that’s still burying my money in the yard so I’m going to say Facebook. When it comes to outreach and promotion I tend to get a little long winded, so being able to have more long form communication in a Facebook message historically has served me better.

One useful social media platform that is sometimes forgotten, when it comes to SEM, is YouTube. People love visuals and YouTube is a great way to showcase products and is useful for travel and hospitality companies. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and has over 1 billion users. I know whenever I search a “how to” question on Google, a few YouTube videos show up in the top results. Videos with keyword friendly tags, titles, and descriptions can rank quickly and well. While users may not land right on your website, it’s great for brand recognition and you can add links to appropriate content on your website in each video description.

I think Facebook is the most important platform for SEM. With so many users across a large demographic, it’s the best way to reach a wide audience. Plus, Facebook Advertising has come a long way since it was first rolled out. It allows you to have a very specific target audience so your content and posts are reaching the right audience.

My answer differs then others as I will evaluate this from a display ad/PPC standpoint. While LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter ads each have a purpose and place for marketing strategy, the leader here is Facebook. We can do a lot of good work with Boosted Posts, specific niche, multi-layered audience targeting, as well as remarketing. The downside to this is that their management platform for managing paid social still has a long way to go.

As you can tell by the variety of answers, there is no “one size fits all” answer. I think the best social media platform for SEM is where your audience is. Your content isn’t going to be read if it isn’t shared where your audience is. If you create and share high-quality content where they are at, they can take it and link to it on their own blogs.

As someone who does a lot of outreach and content promotion, I would have to say Twitter. Many influencers like journalists, writers and industry experts have Twitter profiles and can be contacted quickly and efficiently. Instead of hunting for generic company-wide email addresses to promote content, it is often worthwhile to connect with the people behind the scenes.
